![]() ![]() Existing lower cadre with this were the Alkalis’ courts which were also engaged in the dispensation of justice based on the sharī‘ah.2 The colonialists found the emirs’ courts filled with learned and pious jurists whose advocacy was always based on the injunctions of the Qur’ān, hadīth and other Islāmic law books. ![]() On his arrival Lugard found that Islām was well established in the North with the sharī‘ah very well applied. Lord Lugard, who was before then the Governor of the Southern Protectorate, was transferred to Northern Nigeria in the same capacity. With the fall of these two caliphates from 1902 to 1903, the colonialists brought them together under the name of Northern Nigeria. Mahmūd (1988) states that in all the regions of the world colonized by the British, no where was Islām being observed as thoroughly as was the case in these two caliphates, except perhaps in some parts of the Arab world.1 Islām was well established in these two areas with the sharī‘ah well entrenched in the lives and affairs of the inhabitants. Prior to the fall of the Sokoto caliphate in 1903, there existed two mighty caliphates namely Kanem Borno and Sokoto caliphates. ![]()
